Hello!

My name is Shelby Hagan

I graduated from the University of Southern Maine Osher School of Music in May 2023. I have the distinct pleasure of working with ages from PreK through 8th grade in various contexts that include general music, band, contained classes, as well as being a para proffesional in which I learn skills to further individulize my instruction. Other than everything music related I also enjoy baking, playing chess, spending time outdoors, and reading!

General Music Curriculum

All curriculum is based on our National Association of Music Education Standards. For our upcoming concert, I have linked our songs here. The videos I have in order are grades 1-4. Your child should know exactly what song is theirs :)

Beginning Band Resources

When first learning an insturment, bringing it home and practing can seem challenging without your teacher there to answer any question you might have! Below are links that go with your instument that should guide you through any question you might have. If not, please email me and I will answer as soon as possible!

Links to current band videos

Below are various links to the pieces of music we are doing currently in band. I have also pasted a link to a website that is a metronome for you to practice with. Please set it to 50 whenever practicing.

Recent Work

Below are some snapshots of recent work that students have been doing in Music Class!

Our word of the week recently was timbre which means what makes one instrument or voice sound different from another! Students in 1st grade were given the task to color each box what they thought the instruments sound looked like. The instruments were trombone, flex a tone, flute, and a cabana.

This is the work from a student in Mrs. Blake's class. Can you find the different colors they were seeing with each instrument?

This is the work from a student in Mrs. Michaud's class. It is so interesting to see how differently friends react to each instrument's sound!

This is the work from a student in Mrs. Brewer's class. What do you think this student was seeing when they heard each instrument?

Folk Dancing and Group Work

This is Mrs. Beam's class playing "This Old Man" while a student is showing and keeping track of what part we are on. I find huge success with folk dancing and games that are similar for building community within the classroom and working on many skills at once!

While the word of the week was timbre, students in 3rd and 4th grade were listening to the song FREEDOM by Jon Batiste and filling out a chart's questions. The charts questions were as follows:

1. Choose 1 color this song makes you think of. Fill in this box with that color.

2. How does this song make you feel? Fill in the face below and show us how you felt!

3. Write 1 word this song made you think of. Write it in the box below.

4. Draw a picture below that represents the song you hear.

This is the work from a student in Mrs. West's class. I notice how this student could hear the jazz influence in the piece of music we listened to!

This is the work from a student in Mrs. Reid's class. I notice all the different colors the student saw when listening and how this student also pictured the colors moving!

This is the work from a student in Mrs. Sprague's class. I notice how this student was able to picture a bird flying away while listening to this piece of music.

This is the work from a student in Mrs. Smit's class. What do you see that the student was imagining the song to be about?
